The nighttime sleep of her aunts, who claim to acupuncturists and herbalists, is again interrupted-this time by a visit from a distraught pop star, an idol of Effie’s, who strongly reminded me of Taylor Swift while going by the moniker Tilly Soo, and her entourage. Effie admits to never having had an adult apologize to her before-but liking that Selimene does.Įffie begins to settle into life with her aunts and to make friends among her peers. Selimene shouts at the caseworker for interrupting their night with an unwanted child while Carlota invites Effie inside and tries to make her comfortable.Įffie and Selimene warm to one another when Selimene apologizes to Effie for the things that she said.

For me, their characters were the best part of this story, which is rather fluffy-fun, but donuts for dinner while feeling very much like it’s setting up for a series, taking care of character establishment and world building without having very much at stake.Īfter the death of her mother, Effie is dropped off abruptly one night at the large Brooklyn home of her much older aunt, Selimene, and her partner Carlota. But I feel that it’s true, and I can defend it they seem to use a hyphenated surname (Huchbolt-Walloo), although the detail is quick and mentioned only once.

I love seeing older, comfortable lesbians! Do I have absolute proof that Selimene and Carlota are married or at least partnered lesbians? No. I had seen the cover of Witches of Brooklyn in a few Instagram posts, so when I saw it on a library shelf, I picked it up on a whim.
